The central performance by Polanski himself is appropriately off-putting and destabilizing, characteristics that extend to the film as whole as well. Throughout The Tenant he keeps trying to tell people his fears (about the conspiracy, about fascism, about why Simone died) but no-one wants to hear because it's "morbid". All of which makes me wonder if this film was Polanski trying to keep from cracking up.
